A website hosted by the University of Salzburg, containing searchable files of images and objects from the Middle Ages. The website is entirely in German, and the English search function doesn’t appear to work. If you can negotiate through the somewhat cumbersome search interface there are wonderful pictures.

Once you have selected images choose the in-tray icon at the top right:

Then click on the same icon at the top of the main search page. It will take you to the order page summarising the images:

The far right button takes you to ‘continue the order’. If you click on that the options are as below. The translation is under Conditions:

(via Google Translate). You tick the boxes beside each option. Please note that in German ‘scientific’ means ‘academic’ in the English usage.

‘The photos in REALonline were mainly taken by photographers from the Institute of Realism of the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Period. As a publicly funded institution, we make the developed image sources in REALonline available to research and the interested public. Above all, for scientific purposes, digital image data can be ordered under the following conditions. The processing time of your request and the transmission of the digital image data may vary depending on the resources of the staff of the institute.

The image files are provided on the server of the IMAREAL (transmission of image files in other formats on request).’
